WINDSHIELDS
The windshield is a laminated piece of glass, which is designed and manufactured to offer the highest levels of safety in the event of a crash. The laminated glass is made of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of vinyl between them. The three pieces are laminated together by applying high heat and pressure in an oven. Therefore, when a small object strikes a piece of laminated glass, typically only the outer layer of the windshield will break. However, a severe impact can cause the glass to “shatter,” but the glass usually does not fly apart because the broken pieces normally adhere to the vinyl inner layer.
Every part of a new car comes from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), including the windshield.
For windshield replacement, you have the option to select a replacement made by a company that manufactures OEM windshields or glass made from a non-OEM manufacturer (often referred to as aftermarket glass. Both OEM and aftermarket glass must comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Importance of a Windshield
The laminated glass windshield plays two important roles:
- Improved structural integrity of the vehicle
- Increased safety for driver and passengers.
The firmness of the windshield and its bonds to the vehicle strengthens the fame of the entire vehicle. Additionally, in the case of an air bag deployment, the windshield acts a cushion allowing the airbag to work properly.
BACK GLASS
The back glass or rear glass is located opposite of the windshield, located in the back of the vehicle, creating a barrier to the outside. Similar to the windshield, the back glass helps the vehicle keep its rigid frame and protects passengers in the vehicle.
Like the windshield, every make and model has a different back glass. However, many have the same features that are designed to keep occupants of the vehicle safe and make it easier to drive in different conditions.

All back glass must be clean and clear so a driver can utilize the rearview mirror properly. If you notice lines on your back glass that is the rear defrost system. Those lines run a small current of electricity to heat the back glass.
How Back Glass is Made
Unlike the windshield, which is laminated glass, the back glass is a tempered glass. In most vehicles, the side glass, vent glass, or quarter panels are tempered glass. Tempered glass is produced by heating the glass to more than 1,100°F and then rapidly cooling it. The “tempering” process makes the glass many times stronger than untempered glass of the same thickness. Therefore, allowing the glass to withstand a blunt force. When a tempered piece of glass breaks as designed it disintegrates into small pieces of glass about the size of rock salt instead of large jagged pieces. Often tempered glass is referred to as safety glass for this very reason.

These glass panes are located on the sides of the vehicles in the door.
How Door Glass is Made

Vent Glass
Vent glass is generally mounted to the sides of the vehicles, normally near the door glass. Vent glass can in a few cases be tilted open. In recent history, almost no vent glasses open on passengers’ vehicles. The purpose of a vent glass is to allow the door glass to able to roll down farther than they would without the vent glass. The vent glass allows the door glass to roll down past the wheel well. Vent glasses are in the rear and front of windows or sometimes in the front of the front doors. Vent glasses were developed to allow air flow to passengers prior to air conditioning in vehicles and provide a quick look of the surroundings to allow for a safe driving.
Quarter Glass
Quarter glass is used to help drivers see the surrounding area. A quarter glass is designed to shatter into tiny pieces to prevent harm. A quarter glass is normally the last piece of glass on the side of the vehicle. They can be located before the front door glass or after the rear door glass. Quarter glasses may be stationary or retractable.
REPAIR OR REPLACE

Windshield repairs can be a more affordable option. In fact most insurance companies completely cover the cost of a windshield repair. It is important to remember a chip repair will not completely remove the blemish from the glass. However, fixing the chip can prevent having to replace the entire windshield later.
Chip Size
The chip must be smaller
than a quarter.
Chip Depth
The chip doesn't go all the way
through the glass.
Chip Location
The tip is outside the driver's line of vision and cannot be located on or near the edge of the glass.
A windshield chip can be successfully repaired if it is less than the size of a quarter. A chip is a gap between the two layers of glass. This gap contains air, dirt, and broken glass that must all be removed and then filled in with resin in order to restore the windshield’s structural integrity.
If too much time has passed to repair your windshield the chip will likely get bigger and your only option will be a full windshield replacement.
We utilize a state-of-the-art windshield repair tool to remove these contaminants out of the chip so that the repair resin properly flows to the point of defect. All Service Glass uses only the highest quality windshield repair resin that withstands environmental extremes.

This may be your first chipped or broken piece of auto glass. The process can seem overwhelming and frustrating if you are not familiar with the replacement process. Glass plays an important part of safety in your car so it is important to use a reputable shop.

- If I decide to repair a chip and it is not repaired properly, or I am unsatisfied with the process, will they apply 100% of the money spent towards a windshield replacement?
